Regional Senedd member Altaf Hussain has donated defibrillators to two schools within Bridgend county borough.
Welsh Conservative Dr Hussain, who is a retired orthopaedic surgeon, has donated the equipment to Tondu Primary School and Penyfai Church in Wales Primary school. He is also a borough councillor representing Penyfai and sits on Newcastle Higher Community Council as well.
He said: “I have long campaigned for more defibrillators to be provided in Wales. I would love to see one in every street as they are proven to save lives. If someone suffers a cardiac arrest, there are literally only minutes available to save their life. I have worked in the past with organisations like St John Ambulance Brigade to ensure that training in the use of defibrillators is available and I will be pressing Welsh Government to ensure that more are provided throughout the length and breadth of Wales.”
Dr Hussain has also arranged training to be provided to pupils and staff at each school although Covid restrictions has delayed this at the moment. The defibrillators provided are suitable for both adults and children to use.
Acting head Julie Mahoney at Tondu and Mike Street, head at Penyfai, both said that they were grateful that Dr Hussain had remembered their schools. These defibrillators will be added to the national register which provides information about the locations of defibrillators for emergency use.
