Dr Altaf Hussain AM has met with residents in Pontarddulais, who are concerned about the effect that Swansea Council's local development plan will have on the village.
The plans could see over 1000 new dwelling houses built in the village. Concerned about the effect this will have on the local infrastructure, villagers are up in arms. They have formed a committee to oppose the local development plan and have organised a petition.
Their main concerns surround the effect this population surge will have on schools in the area - the local primary school has only two spare places at present; the effect on the local GP surgery which is already struggling to keep up with demand, as well as on issues surrounding traffic management, water supply and sewerage.
Swansea Council will be considering the plans in detail at the beginning of next year, and local residents are steeling themselves for a fight.
Prospective Gower AM Lyndon Jones is backing the residents, and Altaf has pledged his support to their efforts.
Altaf said: "I am completely on the residents' side here and will do all in my power to support them. Of course there has to be some development, but not at any price. Pontarddulais has seen a lot of new housing being built in recent years, and this has placed existing infrastructure under considerable strain. It is not clear from the plans that I have seen how the village could cope with thousands of new residents - and potentially thousands of new vehicles on the streets. The situation is bad enough at our motorway junctions as things stand; this development, coupled with further plans to develop in Penllergaer, risk causing gridlock".
